Authentic and Fake Dolly Wink liquid eyeliner

Yes, I became a victim of buying fake makeup items off the internet.

Since my holy grail dolly wink eyeliner is drying out on me, and my local Asian supermarket's dolly wink liquid liner went out of stock for a few weeks, I decided to purchase it over the internet...

Then I got myself in this funny mess, a very high quality replica of the dolly wink liquid eyeliner...

Let's jump right into the comparison!

On the first glance, both packaging looks highly similar, front and back:

Now, taking a closer look at the front:

Apart from subtle color differences between the authentic package and the fake package, I circled out 6 difference on the front of both packages:
1. A sentence by Tsubasa was missing and the fake one has centered the writings.
2. Image of Tsubasa Masuwaka is replaced by "24h" and missing the endorsement by Tsubasa
3. Image of the liner tip is different. The authentic one has a black plastic tip.
4. The authentic package is by KOJI while the fake one is by Fairy Girl (I thought there is a brand called Fairy Drops??)

Moving on to the back of the packaging:

Very close, both retails at 1200 yen. Differences:
1. Dorsement "Tsubasa's Favorite Point" has been removed on the fake one.
2. Entirely difference company and company addresses. The real one is made by Koji while the fake one is made by Fairy Girl. Both have company and factory address in the same citys in Chiba and Tokyo, but slightly different postal code.

Now, moving on to the actual liquid liner:

From the first glance, the most obvious difference is the real dolly wink has a black cap versus the fake one has the same pink base purple poka dots pattern. The printing seems to be a bit muted on the fake one as well.

You can see more clearly what I meant by the muted poka dots in the picture below. The dots doesn't seem to be that "high" of resolution. At the end of the pen, the real one has a hollow indentation while the fake one doesn't have a hollow. Also the fake one has a raised lip at the edge too:

On to the more interesting part. You see how messy tip of the fake one is. Ink is everywhere. The real dolly wink has a black plastic tip and the brush itself has the typical calligraphy brush tip while the fake one is a spongy felt-pen tip (I guess this means less flexible with drawing a fine line?):

Moving on to swatches. Surprisingly the fake Dolly Wink seems to be blacker and more pigmented. And I can also draw a fine line as well. Surprise...

Overall, a very interesting investigation. But I doubt if I would want to use the fake Dolly Wink as I am not sure its ingredient and having to apply eyeliner so close to my eyes I am afraid it have harmful ingredients in the liquid eyeliner.

The seller of this fake eyeliner claims it is just the same company that makes it but with a different packaging. But I think it's more than packaging. I am pretty sure this is totally BS and it's just a replica. Oh well... into the landfill it goes and money wasted!

What do you guys think about this fake dolly wink? Do leave a note :)

Dolly Wink Eyeshadow 01 Brown Sweet Dolly

As the weather starts to warm up in New England, it's a bigger motivation for me to get out of the hose more often. (But as I am writing up this blog entry it started pouring outside and the rain is supposed to continue for one whole week! Am I jinxing myself or something?? BOO!)

Anyways, I finally started digging into the stash of make up goodies that Momo-chan sent me a while ago. First I picked this Dolly Wink eyeshadow out of the stash randomly.

I have heard great reviews about this eyeshadow with its creamy texture and nice pigmentation.

Dolly Wink is actually a brand under Koji and is developed by pop teen model Tsubasa Matsuwaka. I am really jealous of her fair and flawless skin!

At the first glance, I am very impressed in how good the Japanese are with their product packaging!! This Dolly Wink eyeshadow, in particular, is designed like a booklet/magazine like.

Back of the packaging:

"Spine" of the packaging, see why I say it looks like a magazine with the issue number 01 on it?

The packaging can open up like a book/magazine. Inside the booklet you actually get to see the eyeshadow application steps and tips.

More pictures on Tsubasa Masuwaka, posing as a sweet lolita. At this point, I think the book layout works well as her own diary for her dedicated fans :)

And moving on to the eyeshadow itself. The design of the black glossy case with some swirly floral patterns reminded me of Anna Sui's design, and I think a lot of people who had review this eyeshadow palette also said the same comment as well...

Colors inside the quad palette, from left to right, a warm tone gold/light brown, a creamy light yellow (highlight), a warm reddish terracotta brown, and a deep matte brown (as liner):

And the reviews were right! These colors are indeed pigmented and creamy. With one swipe on my fingers, the colors were picked up very easily!

Swatches of the colors at the back of my arm. And they are with just one swipe of my finger tips from the above picture. I am totally sold!

EOTD look, and I basically followed the steps in the booklet. A very gorgeous nude look for daytime look. It would look even better if I have fair skin like Tsubasa Masuwaka.

The texture is highly comparable with Urban Decay's NAKED palette, but I feel I will get more use out of the Dolly Wink eyeshadow because the colors are more suited for daytime look. I am not saying that UD's NAKED palette is bad, it's just that sometimes I don't know what to do with the last few deeper colors at the end of the NAKED palette.

The texture of this Dolly Wink eyeshadow is incredibly silky and creamy, and it's not powdery and there is no fall out. The colors stay put for hours (like 9 hours at least?!) even without the use of an eyeshadow primer.

I am so in love with this!

I know that Dolly Wink also has 3 other eyeshadow palettes which features more on the colorful pinks, greens and blues. I am less interested in those exotic "Pocahontas" like colors as I don't think those colors will look that flattering for my skin color and age. I prefer the natural make up look these days.

For those who are interested, here are the rest of the eyeshadows in this collection:

The ultimate liquid eyeliner comparisons, Kiss Me Heroine Make, Dolly Wink, and NARS

The only 3 kinds of liquid eyeliners I own are from top to bottom, Kiss Me Heroine Make, Koji Dolly Wink, and NARS stylo liner.

Kiss Me Heroine Make and Dolly Wink are pretty similar in pen size, tip, and ink quality, as I have mentioned in my previous posts. NARS stylo liner is my least favorite because of the difficulty I have with applying the ink with its dried up felt tip.

Putting the tips of the eyeliners side by side:

You can see why I love KMHM and Dolly Wink a lot. Their tips are moist with ink and so fine, 0.1mm to be exact.

A swatch of the 3 liquid eyeliners on the back of my hand:

From top to bottom, Kiss Me Heroine Make, Koji Dolly Wink, and NARS. As you can see, KMHM has a slight spreading of ink into the cracks of my skin. But I didn't notice a spread of inks when I use this eyeliner when tightlining. It also appears to me that NARS' ink is the deepest black of the three.

Putting these eyeliners to the test of its waterproof qualities:

All of the liquid eyeliners did not smudge under water. That's a good sign!

Moving on with the ease of cleansing with makeup remover. Here I use my Shu Uemura make up cleansing oil and gently spread across the three swatches.

NARS is the first one to go. Both KMHM and Dolly Wink stay here. After a few more rubs and emulsifying with water, they are going away too.

I feel like these eyeliners are easier to clean than Majolica Majorca's mascaras. So my verdict? I will go for Kiss Me Heroine Make or Dolly Wink. Definitely will not be repurchasing the NARS stylo liquid eyeliner.

Koji Dolly Wink liquid eyeliner in Deep Black

I promised earlier that I will review on Koji Dolly Wink liquid eyeliner. This eyeliner only comes in 1 color, which is Deep Black.

The design of this pink is quite kawaii, a pink base with purple poker dots, with its signature Dolly Wink font and a purple bow. The cap of the pen is just a plain black cap. (I feel the Kiss Me Heroine Make liquid eyeliner's packaging is slightly sleeker, with a shiny mahogany and gold lettering and rose, heehee I am such a sucker for elegant packaging!)

Again, the tip is extremely fine, and actually it's quite similar with the 0.1mm tip from the Kiss Me Heroine Make eyeliner. Putting both eyeliner side by side:

Apart from different colors with the pencil design, the size of the pencil, length, cap size, and even the pen tip are almost identical.

Then what about the quality of the ink?

Applying Dolly Wink's eyeliner on my eyes:

Again, the feel and texture is almost identical with KMHM's eyeliner. If I am blinded folded I cannot the difference between the two! But of course I cannot do make up with my eyes closed!

Back to the eyeliner itself. It glides on smooth and nice and THIN, without the hassle of NAR's drying felt tip. I have precise control over this pen which I love. Again similar to KMHM, Dolly Wink's eyeliner doesn't dry quick enough, resulting in transfer of some ink on to my eyelash curler. But I am ok with it as I can always reapply easily :)

Given that Dolly Wink and KMHM eyeliner are so similar I have no preference which one I like more. I am ok with using both, but if I have to pick one ultimately, I will go with KMHM because 1. it has a better price point (1050 yen vs. 1200 yen) and 2. a slighly sleeker packaging.

But that's just my 2 cents. I am also happy to use Dolly Wink eyeliner anyways! I got back ups of a Dolly Wink liner because my good friend Momo-chan send me another one in our recent swap. I am one happy girl now!
